What is the minimum age you can whiten a client’s teeth?
The current minimum age restriction is 12 years of age. Client’s must be 12 and over to receive the treatment and it is recommended to have parental or guardian consent for people under the age of 18. If your client is under the age of 18, have them check with their dentist to make sure the treatment is right for them.
The consent form says you must be 18 years of age. Does this mean we cannot whiten a client that is under 18 without parental consent?
It is recommended that anyone under the age of 18 to receive parental or guardian consent for the Professional In-Studio treatment. The SunnaSmile LED Advanced Home Whitening kit does not require age verification and can be sold to anyone.
Can I whiten a client’s teeth if they are pregnant?
We recommend that your client contacts their physician and/or dentist prior to whitening. Currently, there is no regulation on whitening during pregnancy. Whitening Sensitivities vary from client to client and pregnancy can result in heightened sensitivities among clients.
Can I whiten a client’s teeth if they have gingivitis?
It is not recommended to whiten if you have gingivitis and or periodontal disease. In either case, have you client consult with their dentist prior to whitening.
Should the client have a cleaning prior to whitening?
Yes. Cleaning within the past 6 months is preferred as this will allow your dentist/hygienist to assess their mouth and make sure it is healthy for whitening. This will also help maximize results as the plaque and tartar build up is diminished, allowing the whitening to be maximized.
Should a client be refused if they haven’t had a cleaning within the past 6 months?
We recommend that they have a cleaning prior to whitening. This removes the film layer on the teeth, providing faster results. If they have not had a cleaning, the whitening gel has to remove the film layer prior to removing stains. This will reduce the whitening results for some patients. You do not have to refuse the client without a recent teeth cleaning, however please explain that their results will vary based on the state of their teeth.
In the consent form, there are several questions under the yes or no section; do we refuse treatment if a client checks yes to any of the questions?
It is recommended that you refuse anyone who has answered yes to any of the questions.
If my client has canker sores or open sores, etc. in their mouth is it still safe to do whitening?
It is not recommended to proceed with the treatment if a client has canker or open sores in the mouth as it may cause discomfort and pain during the treatment. The whitening gel will cause no harm to the canker or to the open sores as Peroxide has been used on dental patients to heal oral tissue, however, we want the client to be comfortable and enjoy their experience.
Can a client with oral piercings have receive a Professional Whitening?
All oral piercings must be removed prior to whitening.
Can teeth be whitened if they had composite bonding?
When bonding is applied to a client’s teeth it has been applied in a specific colour. Any stains the have occurred over time will be removed from the bonding but the original colour of the bonding will remain the same. The Whitening Gel will not harm or weaken the bonding but the Gel cannot change the original bonding colour, which can result in a client having mismatching teeth as some are whiter than others. It is important to explain this to your client before their treatment begins. Make sure to do a shade match on teeth that do not have bonding for most accurate results.

How long is the Professional Whitening Session?
15 to 20 minutes is the recommended amount of time for the In-Studio Session. For optimal results, make sure the light is working at 100% power, with both the red and blue LED lights on.
How does the product impact people with sensitive teeth?
As a SunnaSmile Professional, it is important to manage expectations with your clients. Since everyone has a different level of sensitivity with their teeth, it is important to differentiate between discomfort and pain. A small percentage of people will have minor discomfort in their mouth during the whitening and this normally dissipates within 10 minutes of the treatment being completed. It is important to discuss the sensations of the gel reacting with the LED light and what the client can expect to feel during the procedure. IF your client starts to experience pain during the whitening, stop the appointment to prevent further discomfort for them.
What does the Whitening Gel Solution taste like?
The gel has a subtle mint and slight peroxide taste. The gel taste is very comparable to other whitening gels on the market for anyone who has used other whitening products.
Will the Professional or Mobile LED light harm the teeth?
No. The LED light is designed to operate at room temperature and uses a narrower band of light than is used in Dental curing lights. The light frequency is above the UV spectrum.
How many Professional Whitening Treatments can a client do in a lifetime?
There is no limit to how many Professional In-Studio sessions a client can do in their lifetime. Be advised that teeth cannot be whitened beyond their maximum natural whiteness, which will vary client to client. Since the gel is pH neutral, it cannot harm the enamel. Once a client has reached maximum results, their teeth will not get whiter. You can maintain a client’s whiteness by doing an In-Studio session every 2 to 6 months pending on their stain levels.
How should my clients be positioned during the treatment for best results?
Clients should be sitting almost completely up-right for the whitening to work properly. Clients should not be reclined as this will cause the gel and saliva to build up in their mouth, making them want to swallow. Clients should not be on their phones or moving their heads around as this will cause the light to move away from their guard, ultimately impacting the results of the treatment.
What type of furniture and/or chair is needed for the treatment?
As long as your client is comfortably propped up and the light is properly positioned to make contact with their mouth, you can use any chair you like. It is recommended to have a chair that can be cleaned (such a faux leather, leather, vinyl etc) as soft fabrics will absorb any saliva and gel formula that may get on it after the client spits out their tray. A side table is also recommended so you can have your items ready for your client, especially when the treatment has been completed and they need to swish out their mouth. A garbage can is required for the client to dispose of their used mouth tray and bib.
Factors that may cause Sensitivity & ‘White Spots’ during and/or after Whitening Treatment
Sensitivity & ‘White spots’ can be caused by a number of factors. Common factors include: Gel that has dispersed from the tray, sores from brushing or flossing teeth too hard, eating something sharp that has nicked the gum line, and gingival infection. To avoid gel dispersing to soft tissue (ie gums), have your client gently bite down on the tray. Do not have the client push the tray into their mouth and make sure the light isn’t hitting against the front of the tray causing it to create pressure, ultimately making the gel disperse onto the client’s gums.
If ‘white spots’ appear, this is generally cause from irritation from the gel being left on the soft tissue. Lack of oral hygiene, which includes inflamed gums from not flossing regularly can cause ‘white spots’. ‘White spots’ usually disappear within 10 minutes but can take up to 24 hours to fully disappear. Wait 48 hours before doing any additional whitening treatments on the client if this has occurred.
If a burning sensation occurs during the treatment that causes moderate to extreme discomfort to the client, end the treatment. It is important to have a protocol in place to check on your client multiple times during the treatment. Using hand signals, such as thumbs up (everything is okay) and thumbs down (in pain and discomfort), will allow you to communicate with your client to make sure the treatment and their comfort levels are going as they should be.
SunnaSmile Ingredients have been designed to whiten and provide oral health benefits and the gel formula is a registered Natural Health Product (in Canada). If your client is experiencing pain or major discomfort during the treatment, stop the treatment, have them sign off on their consent form that the treatment was not completed.
Can a client swallow during the 15 minutes? Will consuming the gel harm them?
Regulation (In Canada) mandates no swallowing while the solution is in the client’s mouth, however extensive testing has confirmed that at a peroxide level less than 1%, it will not cause any problems. It is important to have the client propped up to avoid the need to swallow and gel that may seep into the mouth from the guard.
After a Professional In-studio treatment, what is the best way for the client to get rid of the whitening gel? Can they swish their mouths out with water to remove any remaining gel?
Once the treatment is complete, have your client swish out their mouth with room temperature water to remove any remaining gel. Since the Xylitol in the gel formula increases saliva production, your client may experience an excess of saliva in their mouth. Although not glamourous, once the treatment has been completed, have your client remove their mouth guard and spit into a receptacle, making sure to pass them paper towels to wipe their mouths with. The bib can also be used to capture the guard, gel, and saliva. Having a disposable cup with room temperature water ready to go for when they complete the treatment will allow them to get back to a comfortable position sooner. Once they have removed their guard, have them swish and spit their mouth until they feel they have removed all of the excess gel and saliva from the treatment.
How many shades will the client whiten after one treatment?
On average, a client should see 2 to 4 shades difference in one session. Some people can move more shades than this and others only move 1 shade. This is all dependent on the client’s ability to take to the gel and the preparation of the In-Studio Session.
Appearance of fine lines and “cracks” in a client’s teeth after the Professional In-Studio Treatment
All teeth have fine lines which are not typically noticeable given the film or pellicle layer on the teeth. Depending on the specific genetic traits of the teeth, these can be more noticeable after whitening, particularly in the person has any calcium deposits or fluorosis. As the teeth naturally remineralize over the following 24 hours the tubules will reseal and the lines will be less visible. Should this still be noticeable the person can go to the dentist for a cleaning and polish which will further reduce or eliminate the lines.
Is there a Guarantee?
We offer 100% guarantee that the client’s teeth will change at least 1 shade during the treatment. It is important to note that you must be taking their before and after shades under the same light and in the same body position in order to properly assess what the whitening changes are. Alternatively, if your client experiences pain that causes them to be unable to complete a session they will not be charged for the treatment. Have them sign the consent form and note that they could not complete the treatment.
How soon can a client do back-to-back whitening sessions?
They can do another session the following day (24 hours) minimum in between provided they had no white spots or soreness. If they experience white spots or soreness, it is advised to wait a until their mouth has healed and their white spots have been disappeared.
Cleaning your Light
Always use a salon grade disinfectant on the mouth piece of your SunnaSmile lamp in between clients. For best practice, clean your light again before you begin a treatment so both you and your client can be assured that the light is sterile.

When can a client eat and/or drink after they complete a professional in-studio treatment?
During the first hour after the treatment, clients are to only consume water and avoid all foods. Since the gel remains inside the tubules and continues to whiten to whiten the teeth, it is crucial to avoid any staining food or beverages for 24 hours as the tubules are still resealing. It is important to avoid things such as coffee, tomato (pasta) sauce, berries, etc. Anything that causes staining to teeth is best to be avoided after the treatment. For a client to maintain their whiteness, we recommend the get an Advanced Take Home Kit which will allow them to remove any stains from their teeth.

SunnaSmile is a cosmetic self-administered procedure and therefore is no different than buying a whitening kit at a pharmacy. You cannot administer the product on the customer. It must be self-administered. The customer is purchasing the whitening kit and the use of the light is complementary. You can explain the steps in using the whitening kit and assist them in taking shade guide reading and getting the kit ready and turning the light on. You may not administer the procedure, it must be done by the customer. As this is a product the customer is buying and self-administering it does not fall into your insurance requirements for services YOU are providing. When you buy SunnaSmile you are automatically covered by $5 million dollars worth of product liability coverage, with full manufacturers product protection, at no charge to you.
Lights must be kept in original packaging (including both the box and the foam for safe shipping and handling) in order to receive a full warranty. It is up to the client to ship the light back in safe condition. Please also film a short video on what is happening with your light and email to us before sending back.
As a SunnaSmile wholesaler, you get a 2-year warranty that covers both parts and labour for repairs to your SunnaSmile LED light. Wholesalers who make re-occurring orders receive an additional extended warranty.
We want everyone to have a positive experience with SunnaSmile. Although rare, if a client is dissatisfied for any reason, we will refund the kit back to you and expect you to not charge the client. You need to send us the signed consent form in order to receive the refund back.
