I have a client who swallowed the gel from the teeth whitening session, is there anything she should do, she swallowed a lot.

Health Canada warning states you should not swallow. Having said that nothing in the gel once it has been activated in the mouth and combined with saliva is harmful. The peroxide level breaks down in the saliva to less than 1% and is not considered harmful.

Can teeth be whitened if they had composite bonding done to there teeth?

With respect to the bonding it is applied in a specific colour  and any stains that have occurred over time will be removed. The colour of the bonding cannot be changed and the whitening gel will not harm the boding material.

I did a studio treatment on a client and after it was done she noticed what looked like cracks in her two top middle teeth and 3-4 teeth on the bottom.  Is that from the treatment or what caused that?

All teeth have fine lines which are not typically noticeable given the film or pellicle layer on the teeth. Depending on the specific genetic traits of the teeth these can be more noticeable after whitening particularly in the person has any calcium deposits or fluorosis. As the teeth naturally remineralize over the following 24 hours the tubuals will reseal and the lines will be less visible.
Should this still be noticeable the person can go to the dentist for a cleaning and POLISH which will further reduce or eliminate the lines.

There are quite a few products available on Amazon for example that seem to be the same whitening system as yours using led light trays but at a far lower price. Can you explain the difference between your product and others on the market sold for much less?

The lights you see on Amazon and E bay do look the same as the SunnaSmile light, however they are not the same. Almost all of these lights use 1 LED that is either blue or white, the SunnaSmile light has 5 blue LED lights. The SunnaSmile light was designed to use the same LED nanometre range as the table top light – 450 470 nm, the other lights do not use this light frequency as it was custom designed and manufactured for SunnaSmile.

'I recently started using your home whitening kit and on the 3rd day ( of initial whitening) I ended up with a small white patch in my gums above my front middle tooth. It's painful and feels like my gums may have been burnt? I felt some discomfort when I first turned the light on, but thought maybe my tooth was sensitive because I have some gum recession. I have been using the light for 20 mins ( 2 - 10 min sessions) as indicated in the instruction hand out.
Is this common? Why would I have gotten burned?'

While this does not happen often it will happen on rare occasions usually from using a little too ‎much gel in the tray. It will also happen if you have irritated gums. The good news is the gel will actually help heal oral tissue and has been used to treat gingivitis. Stop whitening for 24 hours and resume when your tissue feels normal. Use a little less gel in the tray.

White Spots and Sensitivity

White spots may appear on gums.  If a burning sensation occurs that causes discomfort to the client – cease the treatment.  Have a protocol in place prior to doing the treatment that you will be checking on the client and advising – thumbs up with everything ok, thumbs down if the treatment is causing discomfort and should be ceased.  White spots can be caused by a number of factors including:  Gel that has dispersed – do not push the tray back when inserted, it should rest in place and the client relax their jaw when the tray is in.
The client could also have sores from brushing too hard or eating something sharp that has nicked the gum line.  It could also be a gingival infection. The gel will actually help heal the area. White spots should disappear within 10 minutes to 24 hours.  Wait 48 hours before doing any additional whitening treatments. Should you need to stop a client during the treatment send the client consent form detailing reason to stop the whitening to:  info@sunnasmile.com A replacement kit will be sent no charge with your next order.  You do not need to charge your customer. SunnaSmile is all about a positive client experience.
SunnaSmile products are made with Gel registered as a Natural Health Product.  Ingredients have been designed to whiten and provide oral health benefits.

How long should the lights last?

LED lights they should last 20,000 hours, or in excess of 50,000 treatments.

Is LED light Safe?

The original light activated whitening was called laser whitening. They actually uses lasers and I have met one of the key Dentists involved in that work. The lasers heated the dentin and killed the tooth. This was done in the early 1980’s and was never adopted. The original zoom system did heat the teeth and caused pain but did not harm the tooth. Newer LED systems do not cause heat and cannot harm the teeth. In fact the light spectrum is the same as a LED curing lights used every day in every dental offices.

After an in-studio teeth whitening session, can you swish your mouth out with water?

Yes – you can swish! Just no drinking anything but H20 for the next 60 minutes.  The gel remains inside the tubules and continues to whiten. No consumption of any staining food or beverages 24 hours as the tubules are still resealing.

What’s the best way to get the post-treatment saliva out of their mouth?

The xylitol in SunnaSmile increases the salivary flow, helping to reduce sensitivity, but it is not the most elegant part of the treatment! The main tips for reducing the discomfort of the saliva overflow: a slight recline during the treatment, advise the client on what to expect, and having lots of paper towel ready at the end. Upon removal, the bib is great tool for the client to remove the tray and collect any residual saliva.  Also, have a disposable small cup and a bottle of water ready for the client for them to swish and then spit into the cup after they remove the tray.

The consent form says you must be 18 years of age. Does this mean we cannot whiten a client that is under 18 without parental consent?

It is recommended that anyone under the age of 18 receive parental consent for the in-studio treatment. However, Health Canada regulates that teeth whitening can be performed on anyone 12 years and older. The SunnaSmile LED Home whitening kit does not require age verification.

In the consent form, there are several questions under the yes or no section; do we refuse treatment if a client checks yes to any of the questions?

It is recommended that you refuse anyone who has answered yes to any of the questions.

Do we refuse a client if they have not had a dental teeth cleaning in the last six months?

We recommend that they have a cleaning prior to whitening. This removes the “film layer” on the teeth, providing faster results. If they have not had a cleaning the whitening gel has to remove the film layer prior to removing stains. This will reduce the whitening results for some patients. So, you do not have to refuse the client without a recent teeth cleaning, however please explain that their results will vary.

What is the maximum limited amount of in-studio sessions permitted for a client? Can you overdo it?

The good news is there is no limit on in-studio SunnaSmile sessions. Be advised that teeth cannot be whitened beyond their maximum natural whiteness, which varies by individual. The gel is PH neutral and cannot harm enamel.  Once a client has reached maximum results they can do touch ups depending on lifestyle every 2-6 months.

How soon can a client do back-to-back whitening sessions?

They can do another session the following day (24 hours) minimum in between provided they had no whites pots or soreness. If they experience white spots or soreness, then it must be a few days later until their next session.

If a client does not want a home kit to maintain their teeth, what is the advisable schedule for in-studio whitening sessions?

Typically most clients will want a touch up in 3-6 months. Some clients may prefer to do back to back sessions to get better results.

At the least how many shades of whitening should clients see after an in-studio session? Two shades?

A client should see 2-4 shades difference in one session. Some people move up to 8 shades whiter.  Results are unique to each individual based on genetics and lifestyle traits.

Do mouth piercings (tongue, lip, cheek) have to come out during a session?

Yes, otherwise they may turn black depending on the material.

Can a client swallow during the 15 minutes? Will this hurt them?

Regulation mandates no swallowing while the solution is in the client’s mouth, however extensive testing has confirmed that at a peroxide level less than 1%, it cannot cause any problems.

If you have canker sores or open sores, etc. in your mouth is it still safe to do whitening?

It is not recommended to proceed with the treatment if a client has canker sores as it may cause discomfort. Note: the whitening gel will not harm the canker. Peroxide has been used on dental patients to heal oral tissue.

What is the shelf life of the product?

18 Months for In Studio Kit, 24 Months for At Home whitening

What type of furniture will be needed for this?

All you would you need is a side table for the light and preferably a slight reclining chair. However any chair would work.

How does this compare to a professional treatment done at a dentists office as far as whitening goes? How do we explain this to our clients?

The ingredients in both are exactly the same – just the In Office or In Salon are different strengths. The dental office uses a stronger gel, and use a barrier to protect gums.
Explanation: Dental office = more time in the dental office due to application procedure – less time at home. Salon = less time in Salon - more time at home. The end result will be the same. The at home products for both Dental and Salon are the exact same strength.

It is only a 15 minute service correct?

Yes – 15 Minutes In Spa 20 minutes for at home kit.

How does the product work on sensitive teeth? Any pain been experienced?

Everyone’s teeth have a different level of sensitivity so it is hard to say if zero pain will be experienced. A small percentage of people will have minor discomfort in their mouth and this normally dissipates within 10 minutes.

What does it taste like?

It tastes a little minty and a little like other whitening gels however the taste is quite subtle.

Will the spa or home light harm my teeth?

No, the LED light is designed to operate at room temperature narrower band of light used in Dental curing lights. The light frequency is above the UV spectrum.

Can I whiten during pregnancy?

We recommend that you contact your physician prior to whitening. No government issued restrictions currently exist.

What are the age restrictions?

The current age restriction is 12 and under. Check with your dentist if you are unsure for any specific issues that you may have.

Can I whiten if I have gingivitis?

If you have gingivitis and or periodontal disease you should consult your dentist prior to whitening.

Should I have a cleaning prior to whitening?

Yes if possible and if you had not had a cleaning in the last 6 months we highly recommend.

Is there a Guarantee?

If your client experiences pain that causes them to be unable to complete a 15 minute session they will not be charged for the treatment. Have them sign the consent form and note that they could not complete the treatment.

'I read an article about teeth whitening and one of the things it mentioned was a rebound effect after whitening about a week in. So if an in-studio if a client moves 2-4 shades, the rebound effect might be that they rebound back up 2 shades.'

Most information related to rebound will be related to in office dental whitening and in particular ZOOM because the process dehydrates the teeth making them look chalky. This is temporary and the rebound is related to re-hydrating not re-staining. It is important that you try to reinforce the customer having a take home part to the system to complete any additional whitening and maintain their results. Of course if someone does not follow the directions they can re-stain their teeth.

I just wonder if this is something to indicate to clients at all? To be especially watchful of those staining foods a week in. Right now we say 24 hours, so maybe something to discuss with our clients?

If someone smokes or drinks coffee etc. they really should also get a take home component.

If a clients say that crest white strips work better than SunnaSmile?

Most people do not like crest white strips for results or sensitivity. This is not something we typically run into. Having said that you may of course run into people that prefer them. Better results are highly unlikely given the nature of how they work and the strength of the gel.
